Preston Gaines

Resident #5

August 13 – September 22, 2024

Preston Gaines, an artist, architect, and industrial designer based in Houston, navigates the convergence of technology and the natural world through my work in sculpture, projection-mapping, and interactive installations. Operating under the artistic alias Inanimate Nature, his practice seeks to blur the distinctions between the natural and artificial, challenging conventional views of the environment with a vision deeply rooted in the fusion of digital and natural realms.

Drawing profound inspiration from ancient cultures, notably Kemet (ancient Egypt), his work intertwines symbolism, numerology, geometry, and nature to navigate the realms of self-development and spiritual inquiry. This rich historical context underpins his artistic endeavors, compelling him to craft experimental projects that reflect upon the “Post-Natural Landscapes” — a concept acknowledging the irreversible human imprint on nature. His art embodies a reimagined understanding of nature, one that embraces the intricate dance between human intervention and the natural order.

“My commitment to community engagement and social responsibility is integral to my practice. Through meaningful collaborations with communities, especially within historic Black neighborhoods, my projects aspire to catalyze dialogue and collective creativity. These efforts underscore my belief in art as a powerful conduit for exploration, connection, and social change, offering shared experiences that resonate deeply with diverse audiences.

Employing a blend of traditional and digital methodologies, my work invites contemplation of the interconnectedness of technology, the beauty of the natural world, and the intricate patterns of human experience. Projects like “Flora” and the “Inkblot Echoes” series exemplify my approach, creating immersive experiences that encourage viewers to delve into introspective engagements with nature and the subconscious.

In essence, my artistic journey is one of continuous exploration and transformation, aiming to bridge the gap between varied audiences and the layered narratives embedded within my creations. Through my work, I endeavor to foster a deeper understanding and connection with the natural world, utilizing art and architecture as instruments for community enrichment, environmental stewardship, and cultural dialogue.”
