Suzanne Wyss

Resident #1, January 17 - February 26, 2024

Suzanne Wyss is a multi-disciplinary artist focusing on installation and sculpture, transforming industrial materials into organic forms. Using repetition and the inherent “isness” of each material, they are transformed into something altogether new, morphed into natural form and movement.

Wyss received her MFA in sculpture from Indiana University in 2013 and her BFA in sculpture and ceramics from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, in 2010. She originates from the Black Hills of South Dakota. Since becoming a Texan in 2013 her most notable previous works are a permanent installation at Springdale General, Thinkery ATX, and a site-specific installation for the Facebook Artist in Residence Program. In the spring of 2023, Wyss received her master’s in Landscape Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin to further explore the integration between sculpture and landscape.

Artist Statement:
My body of work reflects the forest of my mind, grown one species at a time. Mimicking the essence of nature while utilizing the remnants of Westernized culture, my work evolves a complex forest of emotions into intricate growths of these everyday materials. It is an organic movement, a conversation, a repetitive act searching for a new answer. I seek transformation of my materials by using them in mass quantities, and I invent processes that are so repetitive their execution becomes a meditation. The act of which is the line between precision and confusion, between pain and pleasure, and between me and this painfully beautiful, painfully brutal, painfully wondrous world. I play.
