Casey Alfstad

Resident #2
March 21 - May 5

Casey Alfstad (she/they) is a video sculptor and new media art designer from Springs, New York, based
in Austin, Texas. Alfstad finds a parallel between experimental tech and queer culture in that both are
proactively designing what the future can look like. When she’s not producing her own sculptures, she is
working alongside museums, galleries, and artists to design digital capabilities into their creative
practices. Alfstad is also the co-founder of @ConceptAnimals, a femme artist run publication.
“I combine fine arts like sculpture and painting with tech mediums such as video-based projection
mapping in order to create hybrid surfaces that reflect the increasingly digital aspects of our society while
inciting curiosity in the malleability of the future. In a culture that thrives off of definition, absolute thinking,
and categorization, I digitize traditional art mediums as a way to blur the bounds of a ‘static object’
and highlight the infinite potentiality in all things. My experiments between fine art and electronic media
are a practice of releasing and returning objects to their raw forms of obscurity. I utilize time-based work
and elements of illusion to facilitate “glitches of uncertainty” in the viewers’ perceptions of traditional
art and the world around them. Everything is a creative medium, an object is a temporary state, and the
future is ever-forming and changing.”
