Big Medium + The Projecto

MOLLY SYDNOR

Big Medium and The Projecto are thrilled to collaborate and bring artist Molly Sydnor to Austin for a pop-up exhibition in our space!

“Originally crafted in 2021 under the title Cognitive Vibrations, this work was inspired by CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). In CBT, a color board was used as an exercise for anxiety. The installation "Cognitive Vibrations" is a direct response to incomplete therapy, utilizing the creation of intricate weavings. This body of work has since evolved into dynamic site-based installations. Each installation is a reflection of my ever-changing perspective and state of being, adapting to the unique essence of each location.

Brought to Big Medium for its fifth iteration, After the Rain Part I harmonizes two previous concepts: the meditative weavings ("Cognitive Vibrations" and mirrors that symbolize self-reflection, dreams, and new beginnings. At its core, "After the Rain Part I" is designed to be inclusive and accessible to audiences of all backgrounds. While it embodies the literal phenomenon of a rainbow emerging after rainfall, its deeper meaning lies in the revelation of creativity and artistic rejuvenation following periods of personal struggle with depression and anxiety.

Viewers are invited to bring their own interpretations and experiences to the installation, enhanced by the ambient brown noise that envelops the space. As they immerse themselves in the shifting colors reminiscent of cognitive behavioral therapy coping strategies, emotions are stirred and perspectives challenged. The intentional interplay of warm and cool tones, coupled with the rhythmic oscillation of contrasting hues and vast textures, creates a mesmerizing vibrancy that captivates the senses and fosters introspection.”
